SJL SPOTLIGHT: SISTA SOULJA

Watts Community Leader | Social Activist

Matt+of+IGA+Post+2+%289%29.jpg

Cynthia Mendenhall, better known as ‘Sista Soulja’ or ‘Big Mama’, has been a known and respected voice throughout Los Angeles for many years. Further, while her work remains local to LA, her impact has earned national attention.

Sista can be seen featured in New York Times articles, heard on social justice panels, and her influence reaches everyone from at-risk youth in the projects to powerful officials like Maxine Waters. Her impressive list of accomplishments reflects a career in impact that deserves to be recognized and awarded as the gold standard for community service.

Born & raised in Watts, Sista intimately understands the needs of her community. Often times her effectiveness in helping others face challenges, comes from her experience living through them herself.

After tragically losing 2 sons to gang violence within a 60 day period, Sista demonstrated her strength and resilience when she responded by successfully calling for a ceasefire. Her actions undoubtedly prevented further loss for families in warring LA neighborhoods. Since then, Sista has committed her life to ending gang violence and elevating her communities.

Watts families, organizations, and volunteers continuously benefit from all of the time, effort, sacrifice and love that Sista puts into her community on a daily basis. Leading by example, Sista emphasizes the importance of expanding beyond the individual, into service for the entire family. “A lot of people come into these communities and get attached to the kids, but what they don’t realize is in order to help the kids you need to connect with the whole family.”

Sista earned the respect of the community, officers, politicians, and many athletes and entertainers; because anyone who meets her knows she will give everything to help improve the circumstances of those around her. The Social Justice League is committed to continuing to find ways of amplifying, supporting, investing, and capturing the incredible work that Sista continues to do.

There is no question that Sista has a gift for uplifting others, but it’s her unconditional love, unrelenting commitment, and unselfish action that make her the amazing woman so many across Los Angeles know and love. On behalf of the entire SJL team, we love you Sista!

Identifying an unmet need in the community, she strategically founded “No More Secrets” Mind Body and Spirit Inc. over 6 years ago, a non-profit Philadelphia-based organization that focuses on a realistic approach to sexual health; realizing that we must address all parts of oneself to achieve total transformation. Together with her daughter, Nya McGlone, 275 three-month supplies of menstrual products are hand delivered directly to homes each week throughout Philadelphia neighborhoods.

In February of 2021, Lynette Medley established the country’s first brick-and-mortar menstrual health hub called The SPOT Period located in Philly’s Germantown neighborhood. The 2,500 square-foot space offers feminine care kits, clean water, operable toilets, access to computers with internet, counseling, educational panels, and a safe space called the Breonna Taylor Safe Room. It also offers a room for children to play and learn from Nya who utilizes her academic STEM background to provide knowledge to youth.

At the SPOT, Lynette has several prepared bags containing 2-3 months’ worth of feminine care supplies that she welcomes people to take. She notes that visitor will often timidly pick up one box of tampons out of the bag before Lynette or Nya reinforce that the entire bag is for them to take home. The communities served are not typically used to this generosity. No More Secrets wants to change the way individuals perceive what they deserve and normalize picking up a free three months supply of products to meet their feminine care needs. Menstrual health needs should not be seen as a luxury, they are medical necessities and should be a human right.

Lynette saw an unmet need and established a whole new way of addressing it – driven by passion and funded through crowdsourcing. She has received incredible levels of support from the community, including partnerships with universities, political figures, and other grassroots organizations. She is a beacon of inspiration and an example of how real change-work can be done in the community. Currently, No More Secrets is working on find a corporate partner and funding for a van to improve the efficiency of their 275 weekly deliveries.

SJL SPOTLIGHT: JESS BEARD

Inspiring Role Model | Watts Queen’s Club | Universal Music Group

Matt of IGA Post 2 (8).png

Jessica (Jess) Beard has had a passion for non-profit entities and efforts since an early age. From high school to the present, she has been a consistent volunteer and employee of various influential organizations across the country. Her active involvement ranges from volunteering at local domestic abuse shelters to interning in Washington DC for a nationwide organization.

Jess pours her heart into supporting underserved communities. Through her life experience, Jess can relate to many of the challenges faced by at-risk youth and she shares uplifting advice to help guide them on their journey.

Ultimately Jess’ hopes to start an organization to show kids that they’re not defined by their circumstances, and empower them with tools to write their own narrative.

Jess seeks to enhance youth development and education in impoverished communities, not only in traditional learning, but in any way to expand upon one’s knowledge.

Jess intends for her organization to help secure financing to help teens afford college. Also, her organization will seek to provide kids with education on financial literacy, a pivotal quality to have that is often missed within impoverished communities.

At Universal Music Group, Jess continues to find ways to close the gap between the corporate and community. Social Justice League is proud to highlight Jess’ wonderful mind and heart. Our SJL team is immensely grateful the advocacy and support Jess has already shown for our shared vision and we’re excited to continue making an impact together.

March ‘21 Impact Summary

SJL SPOTLIGHT: IELAF ALTOMA

Inspired by ielaf Career Coach | Watts Queen’s Club Program Director

IMG_3125.jpg

ielaf Altoma has always had a love for helping others since she was a young girl which she attributes to her mom. Her first non-profit experience was straight out of college, where she quickly saw it being a lifelong passion.

After receiving her masters in Education, Prevention Science and Practice from Harvard, , ielaf began working as a career coach. During this time she discovered the trend of many minority first generation students who had no vision for what they were in college pursuing. This is when she realized the need to create a business that allowed the conversation of career to happen at any earlier age.

A vision was set to truly impact communities in order to elevate their dreams, opportunities, and resources. Starting on a volunteer basis she fell in love with the Watts community, and found a passion for transforming that space. Worded best from Mrs. Altoma, “getting the support of the Watts community, is an honor. too often people come in not wanting to listen and instead I came in and only listened for 6 months.”

This brings us to today, where Social Justice League is able to support and highlight ielaf not only for the incredible woman she is, but also for her first time launching her own program, “The Queen’s Club”. The Queen’s Club allows her to use her own education and experience to design a program catered to and reflecting the community. She stands on the ground that “it is important to be a resource to the community and empower THEM to be involved”.

In the future ielaf has a goal of creating a stipend program that gives centers and resources in the community money to hire FROM the community. Similar to SJL, she seeks to ensure the appropriate resources are coming into communities, based upon uplifting their powerful voices.

In response to Women’s Month, she wants to be clear that she feels it’s a responsibility of ALL women, to be mentors to young girls. “We have to start with the youth, and take ownership in empowering the next generation of women”.

What a privilege it is for Social Justice League to Spotlight such an uplifting, passionate, and encouraging woman as ielaf Altoma.
